High School Senior Portrait Editing and Workflow

Some people may think this job is snap and go. There is so much more to it than that. The behind the scenes is just as important as capturing the initial photo.

I thought I would share a little bit about my editing & workflow processes? So, here goes…

Here’s what happens once I get home from High School Senior Session :

1. I copy all of the sessions RAW files to my hard drive. (A raw file is a collection of unprocessed data. This means the file has not been altered, compressed, or manipulated in any way by the camera or computer.)

2. Cull.  Culling in simple terms is go through all images and select the best.  I usually do three rounds of culling.  Round one I select every image that is in focus, properly exposed and properly framed. Round two is eliminating images that are similar. Round three is narrowing it down to the absolute best.

3. I then drop all the culled images into Adobe Lightroom.

4. Now it’s time to correct color and exposure (as seen below).  This is probably the most time consuming part of my job.  I strive to make the images as timeless and realistic as possible…mean I want accurate colors and skin tones.

5. I retouch skin or remove any distracting elements from photos.  I want every photo to be print ready when the client views it for the first time.

6. I deliver anywhere from 40-100 images from shoots, depending the collection the client selected.

5. And now my favorite part, delivering the session gallery.  I use an online gallery called Pixieset (which is easy and amazing). It allows clients to view images side by side, making it easy to compare and choose. Clients can also leave me editing notes on images, which is super handy!

6. I always deliver a sneak peek to two right after the session on social media.   The full online gallery is delivered within two-three weeks.
